Plug-in to Work Brigades and Projects

USSF Work Projects

USSF participants that want to ensure their participation in the 2010 USSF respects and contributes to the local hosting effort can participate in a Work Project as part of their USSF experience. Registered participants of the US Social Forum will join Detroit community organizations in hands on projects that will build local organizations and help further their on-the-ground work in Detroit. The work projects will take place during the middle three days of the USSF, June 23-25, 2010 at various locations throughout the city.

USSF Work Brigade

Individuals representing a cross-section of organizations, communities and struggles from the Midwest, South, & Southwest will travel to Detroit in advance of the social forum to work side by side with their counter-parts in Detroit on various work-projects that:

  1. Develop
  2. the ongoing efforts of Detroit Anchor Organizations and Detroit Local Organizing Committee as they prepare for the USSF and its impacts on Detroit

  3. Build
  4. relationships between communities that have been engaging in the social forum process from youth, communications, logistics & other work areas to develop the USSF organizing process.

  5. Contribute
  6. towards practical projects that will advance existing Detroit community-building movements beyond the Social Forum.

Food Justice

The Food Justice projects include community gardens, aquaponics and green space.

Culture

The USSF Mural project is an opportunity to engage local artists and engage in art education and community public art collaborations, and to increase public access to art. Mural making provided a support structure for Detroit’s young men and women to develop their artistic skills, empowering them to take an active role in beautifying their communities. Progressive Bookstore and Community film theatre: Detroit has very few bookstores and no community film theatre. This would be a collaboratively run progressive resource run by Women of Color Detroit, Inc.

Detroit Expanded Workshops

We have a goal to include 10,000 people in the USSF that aren't able to be in Detroit! This is about solidarity with our organization members at home, folks in the international community, and anyone that would like to have a deeper participation and experience with those unable to attend.

Please complete this survey if you have an accepted workshop for the US Social Forum and intend to be apart of Detroit Expanded. We are expecting your response by June 15, 2010 at the latest, although in order to work with you on your connection, we will need much more time!
